VIGA’s Food Access Partnership connects people who grow food with people who need food – everyone wins!
VIGA is committed to making locally grown fruits and vegetables more accessible to low-income islanders.
When Food Stamp customers shop at the Farmers Market, VIGA matches the first $10 spent each week with $10 in Market Bucks to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.
VIGA provides a 100% match for the WIC summer fresh fruit and produce checks and
the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers. Market Bucks are accepted at VIGA member farm stands as well.
The Partnership also distributes VIGA Fresh Fruit and Produce Coupons to island non-profits, who share them with clients and/or use them to purchase food for client meal preparation. Currently, our coupon partners include Vashon Household, The Senior Center, the Community Dinners program, the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness (IFCH), La Comunidad, Vashon Youth and Family Services (VYFS), theDove Project, and the Vashon Community Care Foundation (VCCF).
Looking toward 2016, we anticipate partnering with both the Food Bank’s Summer Lunch Program, and VYFS’s Playspace to include farm fresh fruits and vegetables in
their meals and snacks. We also hope to incorporate a Donation Station program at
the Farmers’ Market, making it easy for shoppers to donate extra produce for the Community Dinner program’s use . Stay tuned for details.
Our current all-volunteer team consists of Dana Illo, Janie Starr, Karen Biondo, Lisa Hasselman, and Merrilee Runyan. We are seeking additional members, so please get in touch if you’d like to join us. You may reach us at foodaccesspartnership@
The Food Access Partnership’s work has been made possible via grants and donations from The Hendrix Foundation, & Granny’s Attic, as well as from islanders like you. We have received additional donations from the Wildwoods Foundation and Les Dames d’Escoffier of Seattle, effective 2016.
We encourage you to make a tax deductible contribution with cash or check at the Market, through the mail (VIGA, P.O. Box 2894, Vashon, 98070) or online by selecting the ‘Donate’ button on the left side of this page.
